Growing up in the south, your parents are 95% going to be traditional when it comes to everything. I am finally realizing how thankful I am to have a mom who was traditional, even when I didn't agree with some of the things until now. So here are a few things you should thank your traditional, southern mama.

1. Knowing how to have southern hospitality

If anyone who knows my mom knows that she always shows the greatest southern hospitality when it comes to anything, especially when having guests over. No matter what time of the day, if there is a guest at our house, there will be plenty of appetizers and drinks for everyone.

2. How to set the dinner table

I think we all need to know how to set a dinner table. Even if you are going to breakfast, lunch, or dinner you still need to know where to put your utensils.

3. What to wear and when to wear it

I am very thankful my mom taught me what to wear on certain occasions and what not to wear. In college, you see a lot of people not dressing appropriate and I am very thankful for a mom who taught me how to.

4. Knowing the traditional no white pants after labor day

Even though I don't follow this rule anymore, I'm still thankful to know the rule when going to certain places like church, nursing homes, or assistant living homes.

5. Saying yes ma'am, no ma'am, no sir, yes sir

I can't tell you how many people I know that don't say this to any adults or to their parents in general. I was taught this from the day I could talk!

6. Having manners

This is such an important thing to have, but unfortunately some people don't have them. You should have manners everywhere you go. From the dinner table to being a guest at someones house. You always need to have manners, thankfully my mom taught me.

7. How to have class

Yes, this is important and no not everyone has it.

8. Having respect for others

There are some people in this world who have no respect for others. My mom taught me how to respect people even if i don't agree or get along with what they do or say. It is very important to have respect for others at all times.

9. Knowing how to look for a gentlemen

They always say that moms know best, and if your mom doesn't like your man, then obviously there is something wrong with him that you do not see. Moms want the best for you and she wouldn't let you date someone you don't need to be with.

10. Always treat people with kindness

Even if you absolutely do not like a person, always treat them with kindness and respect. You can also refer back to number 8 for this one.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
