Rethink Your Opinion Of The Spotted Hyena

Disney got it all wrong.

Rethink Your Opinion Of The Spotted Hyena
Jacquelyn Sagasta

I'm an animal behavior major, so if you know me, you know I take animals very seriously. One of my all-time favorite animals is the spotted hyena. Yeah, that's right, a hyena. You've probably seen them in Disney's "The Lion King" portrayed as menaces. I'm here to explain to you why you should rethink your opinion of these incredible animals.

They aren't just mangy scavengers. In reality, they only scavenge about 50 percent of their food, which is more than just meat; they eat insects and berries, too. Hyenas actually have the strongest jaws of all mammals, with only alligators and crocodiles having stronger jaws in all of the animal kingdom. They have strong enough jaws to snap bones and the stomachs to digest them, and have also been seen eating up to 30 pounds of meat in one sitting! Although hyenas closely resemble dogs, they are more closely related to cats. A hyena is about as closely related to a lion as a dog is to a skunk. There are four species of hyena, the aardwolf, striped hyena, spotted hyena, and brown hyena. The spotted hyena are those represented in "The Lion King" and are of the least concern when it comes to their conservation status. Another cool fact about hyenas is that they live in matriarchal societies. This means that the grandmother hyena rules the pack! They can live in groups of up to 50 animals, with the females being more dominant than males. Even the lowest ranking female outranks the highest ranking male: Girl power! Another reason female hyenas rule the world is, well, they have pseudo-penises. That's right, in order for them to mate, they must retract their enlarged parts making rape physically impossible.

Some scientists actually consider hyenas to be some of the most intelligent animals on the planet. They have a number of different calls that mean different things, almost like their own "language." There is a lot of research currently being dedicated to spotted hyena calls. You've probably heard the expression "laughing hyena," and they actually do "laugh" when they're in playful social situations.

Overall, spotted hyenas are unique as are all animals. My most strongly held belief is that all creatures deserve equal love and respect: Including spotted hyenas.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.

Tamatoa created a liar filled with shiny things simply for the purpose of tricking fish to enter and become his food. He too experiences a lesson in how easy it is to be tricked by shiny things when Moana distracts him by covering herself in glowing algae so Maui can grab his hook.
