In the age of "Netflix and chill" and other forms of instant gratification, entertainment is all around us. With all of this stimulation, it's easy to indulge and take the easy way out. We forget how important and enjoyable reading is. In fact, reading everyday can actually greatly improve other parts of your life — It's definitely good for more than entertainment.
Simply put, reading is known to help your spelling. However, it also increases your vocabulary. You're learning, and you aren't even aware that you're being taught. Can it really get better than that? These are useful skills no matter what major, career, or plan you have for your life.
Except, it does. In addition to a new and improved vocabulary, reading also promotes critical thinking. The ability to analyze and interpret situations is a skill that we can never work too hard to improve, especially considering the importance of problem solving in everyday life.
Reading also broadens your horizons. There are endless amounts of books, stories in the world. In any book, you are able to meet new people (characters) and have new experiences. These fictitious experiences actually have more of an effect on your everyday life than you expected.
Having these new experiences, even through books, helps you to understand things that you may not have yet crossed paths with in your day to day life. Your newly broadened horizons help you to sympathize with situations you wouldn't otherwise understand.
Above all, books help to form connections between people. Let's face it, all of our favorite shows are most people's favorite shows. Netflix really only has so many titles for us all to obsess over. When you find someone who has the same favorite book as you, the results are very different and the rewards are much higher.
In books, we can live as anyone else. Have you ever found someone who has lived the same exact life as you? If your answer to this question is no, then you need to start reading, everyday.
