Deciding to bring a furry friend into your home is no small decision as caring for this companion will be no small task. Just as acquiring a pet is a big decision, deciding where to obtain it from is as well. There are a multitude of pet stores and dog breeders to choose from, but people often tend to look past the number of humane societies overflowing with pets that there are. Perhaps these are looked past because adopting a rescue pet is not for everyone. Through this article, I hope to enlighten you on the cons as I list why you should not adopt a rescue pet.
1. You should not adopt a rescue pet if the overwhelming number of pets in shelters does not concern you.
According to ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million domestic animals enter shelters across the nation each year. That is around 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats that remain homeless as they live in cramped cages without the much-needed love and affection that only an owner can provide.
2. You probably should not adopt a rescue pet if you are completely fine with seeing over a million of them euthanized each year.
With such a tremendously large number of pets in shelters, these shelters often do not have the room or funds to provide care for the number of animals that they take in. This results in the euthanization of around 1.5 million pets each year. That’s right. 1.5 million innocent fur babies lose their lives because not enough people are willing to adopt them.
3. Just purchase your pet from a pet store or breeder if you love spending unnecessary money.
Instead of paying often hundreds or sometimes even thousands for your purebred pup, you could be paying way less. The adoption fee for shelter pets is fairly low, and the pets usually come already vaccinated and neutered. However, if you enjoy shelling out the big bucks for no reason, you should stay clear of these rescue pets!
4. If you want to encourage the harmful practice of puppy mills, keep buying your pups!
When you purchase a dog, there is a substantially large chance that it came from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are kind of like factories where dogs are bred. At these facilities, money is put above the well-being of the dogs. The moms are bred over and over (a very unhealthy amount!), while they along with the puppies are improperly cared for. If you do not mind seeing these sweet creatures suffer this terrible fate, you should definitely keep purchasing your pups!
5. You certainly would not want to adopt a rescue pet if you hate doing good things for the world!
When you adopt a pet, you save a life! You help not only that animal by giving it a home and eliminating the chance of euthanization, but you help the shelter (and all the furry friends it is filled with) by giving it more space and resources. Whether you mean to or not, you are doing a nice, commendable thing for the world! Therefore, if perhaps you are not a fan of showing kindness and giving back to the world, I would not recommend adopting a rescue pet!
