Why You Should Be Nice To Everyone

A kind word can go a long way.

Why You Should Be Nice To Everyone

What fun is it to bash someone? To know that you hurt their feelings? Or that you ruined their day? Being rude or mean to someone to intentionally hurt their feelings is horrible. Even if you’re just joking or you think it’s a game, you might be bringing some hurtful feelings into the picture unintentionally.

You never know what someone might be going through. Mentally, they might be struggling, or maybe they have home problems, you never know.

Nevertheless, you should never be mean to anyone.

I had a friend once who had a difficult relationship with their parents and siblings. Home life was hard for them, and they weren’t very happy for awhile. It didn’t help that people at school would call them names, make fun of the way they acted, looked and dressed.

The unfair school life and home life and the stress of it all combined, and they started to become depressed. They were unhappy, lacked energy and had disinterest in normal activities we would all do together.

Seeing a close friend go through that is heartbreaking. And seeing people be like this to them was unbearable. Fortunately, through time, the bullying and teasing started to decrease. The depression faded. But that’s not the point. That shouldn’t even have to happen.

Bullying and teasing is a serious thing, and it shouldn’t occur. People never know what’s really going on in another person’s world.

The teasing could really hit someone hard, and make their life feel like a burden. Life shouldn’t be like that. We should respect one another and their feelings.

We never know what’s going on in other’s lives, whether it’s family issues, friend problems, trouble in school, whatever it may be. Adding hurtful words or actions onto someone's lives just may send someone over the edge and make them even more miserable.

That’s why being friendly and considerate towards one another is a great way to live. Who wouldn’t want to live in a world where everyone was kind to one another and made each other better person? There’s no point to putting people down. All that is doing is making yourself feel all powerful. But for what? Making someone feel bad about themselves? I can’t wrap my head around the fulfillment or satisfaction of doing that. All that does is make someone else feel awful. That is no way to live.

Always be kind to people because, in the end, you are helping someone even if you’re aware of it or not. A compliment or a kind word could enlighten someone even the slightest, and make their lives or mood just that much better.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
