Are you interested in not being a part of the outside world for a week or two? Do you want to completely isolate yourself from every single person in your life except the lovely members of the Gallagher family? Do you want a TV show to completely consume your entire being? Then "Shameless" is for you!
I was like you once. Going about my everyday life as a normal human being. I would wake up, get dressed, go to work, come home, eat dinner and go to sleep. I had a typical, normal routine. Then, scrolling through Netflix one day, I saw it. "Shameless". Having heard rave reviews about this show, I decided to give it a shot. It was the worst decision of my life.
I would wake up hours earlier before I had to so that I could squeeze in another episode after going to bed at 3:00 a.m. because I kept repeating the infamous word "one more episode can't hurt" to myself. I lost touch with the outside world.
Worst of all, there was no Netflix in my room! I thought I wouldn't be able to watch it in the comfort of my own bed until (PLOT TWIST) I discovered that Showtime has every season. Needless to say, I didn't come out of my room for an entire weekend. I watched three seasons straight through.
But what makes this show so consuming? What is it that makes the average, everyday person become a binge-ing psychopath?
Story lines that "go there"
There aren't many shows that push boundaries to the point that you keep checking your door to make sure your parents won't walk in the room. Being on a premium channel like Showtime gives "Shameless" the room to be a little (or a lot) risque.
The BOYS
I once believed that I didn't think Lip Gallagher was irresistible. I was sadly mistaken. He is irresistible. As is Kevin. And Ian (THAT BODY). And, hell, even Carl when he gets older.
It's funny as hell.
Another reason my family almost conducted an intervention with me was because I would be hysterically laughing to myself late at night watching this damn show. They all thought I was batsh*t crazy! I mean...I am. But, seriously, this show is hysterical. It can be intense and sad, but most of the time is so funny.
Just when you think it can't get crazier, it gets crazier.
Literally. You think they can't go any further and then BAM someone is in jail, someone just had some drugs they shouldn't have had or someone is dying. Sh*t. Gets. REAL.
It touches on subjects that need to be discussed, but rarely are.
This goes along with the story lines that push the limit. Mental illness is a huge topic that makes its way into almost every season. As well as issues with LGBT rights, violence, teen pregnancy, crimes involving children, etc. Again, sh*t gets real.
So, do you have what it takes to be a "Shameless" fan? I'm warning you, you'll get way too attached to fictional characters and relationships. Binge at your own risk.
