My freshman year of college I didn't do much, I made new friends, went to class, and did my homework. I spent my weekend nights watching TV or hanging out in the common room. I wasn't until sophomore year that I joined any clubs. I joined a few to find out who ones I'd like and which ones I wouldn't. Now, as a senior, I am an executive board member for my club. A club, among many campus clubs, that does more than just spit out information, but actually has helped me to grow. Joining clubs on campus is one of the best things you can do. Why?
1. It helps build your resume.
Yes, when you leave college and try to get a job, your employee will most likely ask what you did on campus. If all you've done is go to class and party, you probably won't get the job. Being in a club is a great way to build your resume without being too much of a commitment. Usually, there are meetings 2-3 times a month.
2. It helps you network
Joining a club means you get to meet a whole bunch of new people. And since you've joined the same club you already have at least one thing in common. It's really a great way to make friends outside of the classroom.
3. It helps your community
Any club you join will partake in community events for either the campus community or the town around the campus. Being able to help the community is not only rewarding, but it helps you network with your community members and it's something you can put on your resume.
4. It's a place you can call home
Before you know it, your club will be another home. The meetings will seem second nature, and the events will become effortless. The people you meet will be in your lives throughout the years, and you'll enjoy all of the work you do in and around your community.
So join a club, if you're looking to build your resume, make new friends, help your community and open yourself up to a new world.
