With Spring officially in the air its time to get out and go do all the things you talked about doing when you were cooped up inside for the (very brief) Winter. Although museum-going is an indoor activity, the MoMA is a great place to go in the spring because of its great outdoor garden, many windows, and proximity to Central Park (picnic season is upon us). It is free with your NYU ID and is a wonderful place to soak up some culture after you soak up some sun.
Currently, the museum is featuring Edgar Degas' A Strange New Beauty which is must see if you are a fan of Degas famous work or just someone who likes to see art in process and in execution. In this exhibit, Degas' sketches are shown beside his finished pieces in different antique looking frames. The dim lighting and cobalt blue walls give the room a nice ambiance and make you feel like you are existing at the time these wonderfully detailed work of art were created.
Another notable exhibition is Projects 102: Neïl Beloufa. The exhibit is open until June 12th and is a part of the Elaine Dannheisser Projects Series. This is the first solo New York exhibition for the emerging artist and really showcases the modern digital style. The exhibition has a video playing through out (People's passion, lifestyle, beautiful wine, gigantic glass towers, all surrounded by water (2011)) and the images are purposely obstructed by different hanging transparent screens and surrounded by familiar objects from squished cans to Friends DVDs.
If these two exhibitions don't entice you enough, the permanent collection at the MoMa is always amazing and there are plenty of other work of modern art that can peak everyone's interest. So next time you are planning a nice spring outing, be sure to put the MoMa on your itinerary.
