7 Reasons You Should Go Through Sorority Recruitment

7 Reasons You Should Go Through Sorority Recruitment
The College Panhellenic Council of Illinois State University

That time of the year is coming up! Personally, going Greek was one of the best decisions I made my freshman year and I wouldn't change it for the world. Here are some of the main reasons why you should choose to go Greek at your university.

1. It is a home away from home

Being homesick at college is a common problem amongst students, but this is the perfect cure. You will literally have an instant new family who will support you, motivate you, and be there for you. They do an amazing job of making your temporary home a little more 'homey'.

2. You truly will find some of your best friends

The common saying is: "You will find your future bridesmaids." As cliche as that sounds... it's true. I met two of my best friends through Greek life and I couldn't imagine my life without them.

3. Bigs

For those of you who don't know what a "big" is, a 'big" is basically one of the older girls in your sorority who helps you through all things college. Do you need life advice? Ask your big. Don't know if you should take this class? Ask your big. Need someone to go to Dunkin' Donuts with? Ask your big.

4. You don't have to be a "basic white girl". Anyone can be in a sorority

Most of my friends back home were shocked when I joined a sorority, but there is a sorority for everyone. There are so many different chapters for a reason. The chapter you join will truly be the chapter you fit into. Just because you aren't basic doesn't mean there isn't a chapter out there for you.

5. Leadership Opportunities

There are so many positions you can obtain in a sorority. All of these positions are excellent resume enhancers and can teach you a lot.

6. You will meet so many people

Whether it is people you meet in other chapters or girls in your chapter, it is an amazing way to meet people in college. The best part is that you really do vibe with the girls in your chapter. Who doesn't love good vibes?

7. The process actually works

Believe it or not, you should really "trust the process". You will go through recruitment, and it is weird I'm not going to lie to you, but it works. You will end up where you are supposed to be, and that will be in the chapter where you fit best! Don't psych yourself out, get discouraged or freak out. Being where you fit in is the best part. Embrace it!

Go Greek!

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
