Take it from the girl who never wanted to be in a sorority—go through sorority recruitment. You have probably heard it ten million times to “go to recruitment, even if you are on the fence.” But, I am telling you to take the leap, step out of your comfort zone, and go through sorority recruitment.

There may be many reasons why you want to join a sorority. There may be reasons why you don't. You may have friends who joined, your roommate wants to, or you just might want to get involved. Maybe you heard about a bad experience involving Greeks, or have preconceived notions about sorority women. Maybe you want to join, but people have told you not to, or you are afraid what people will think.

Greek Life at RMU is nothing like the movies. It is not full of mean girls with bad intentions who only strive to be Greek Week Champions. Greek Life at RMU holds the most empowering women on this campus. The Panhellenic women build each other up, teach leadership, and encourage success every single day.

Formal recruitment may sound intense. It may sound scary. But it is an unforgettable experience. You meet women who are like you and unlike you, and that’s why it’s awesome. You become friends with people you would have never crossed paths with had you not gone through recruitment. You meet so many different people that could either become your sister or a lifelong friend. Some of the girls I met at recruitment are my best friends today—even though we are not sisters.

That’s the beauty of recruitment here. We are friends no matter the letters we wear. There is no need to worry about wanting to join a sorority your roommate doesn’t want to join. Join the sorority where your heart is, not where your friend wants to go. We encourage unity among different chapters, and friendships are definitely important throughout the organizations.

You’ll find a “home” wherever you go… even though that sounds cheesy. Getting your bid is an amazing. And trust me, wherever you get a bid from, that’s where you are supposed to be. You’ve heard the cliché “trust the process,” but it is very true. We understand recruitment and we understand you and where you are supposed to be. We want you to have the best sorority experience possible. So, trust us, but also trust yourself.

You may go into recruitment thinking you want to join a specific organization right from the start. Go into the process with an open mind and fresh eyes. Take every day like it’s a new start, and don’t make a decision before formal recruitment even starts. Give every sisterhood a chance.

If you are telling yourself that you want to give recruitment a try, go for it. I promise you, the Greek experience is worth it. The Greek community is a close, tight-knit group of people who want to build each other up to be the best people we can be. That’s why we are in college! We want to better ourselves. We want to be a better us.

That’s why you should go through recruitment. If you want to learn leadership skills that will last you a lifetime, join Greek life. If you want to make lifelong friendships and meet women who will be your bridesmaids someday, join Greek life. Even if you think sorority isn’t for you, give it a try. I promise, it results in a college experience like no other.

You can sign up for formal recruitment at rmu.edu/gogreek.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
