Why You Should Get Involved On Campus

College can be a lot of things. It can be the best times of your life, it can be the most stressful time of your life or the most dreadful time of your life. Your own personal college experience determines this. College is about furthering your education and that is definitely the number one priority, but why not make the experience a little more fun? Getting involved on campus can play a major part in making college the best experience of your life. This is why you should get involved.

IT BUILDS FRIENDSHIPS.

First off, when you get involved on campus you meet a ton of new people. Whether you join a sorority, fraternity, club, or organization, there’s always going to be new people to meet. You learn quickly that a lot of these people will become some of your best friends. You start off working events together, then you start hanging out on the weekends. Next, you’re scheduling classes together, and you begin to wonder how you made it through life this far without them by your side. These friendships aren’t just temporary, they are a lifetime. There are so many great people on your campus. But if you never get out and get involved you’ll never get to meet these people.

IT LOOKS GOOD ON A RESUME.

Now that you are in college, everything you do will be with you for the rest of your life. College isn’t just about attending classes for four years and getting your diploma. It is your chance to get experience in various activities and events that will one day catch your future job’s attention. Many organizations on campus do a lot of community service activities that range from cleaning the local beach to having a can drive. This gets you close with the community and shows that you are willing to work and help others too. Also, if you help put on an event or program on campus, that kind of experience looks really good on a resume ... Jobs these days don’t want someone skilled in one particular field. They want versatile workers. So next time you see a sign for a campus organization, don't hesitate to sign up.

IT TEACHES YOU HOW TO BALANCE YOUR LIFE.

College is busy enough with all the late night studying, note cards, homework, and presentations that are due. So when you are involved in numerous activities on campus and also have a part time job it would be crazy if your life wasn’t a little hectic every now and then. However, when you’re in college and you want to go to every little event, attend all your classes, and get hours at work, you learn to balance your life pretty well. Sure, things will be crazy, but you eventually learn how to deal with the crazy and if there’s a week where there aren't a thousand things you have to do, you don’t know what to do with yourself. This is a great skill to have and jobs look for people who can keep that balance in their life and get all their work done no matter how many tasks you have.

IT HELPS YOU FIND YOURSELF.

When you come to college it’s not uncommon to be uncertain of what you want to do with your life. Many people change their majors once, twice, or even three times before they find the right place for them. When you get involved you get to hang out with different varieties of people and get to help out with different kinds of events. This helps you discover who you are and what you want to be. You learn about the kind of people you like being around and the kind you don’t. You also get to see what events you like helping out with. For example, you may be a nursing student that helps promote a certain event by making posters, flyers, or posting on online media and realize you really enjoy doing that. This could influence you to switch your major to marketing, but if you wouldn’t have helped out with that event you might not have ever gotten the chance to realize you like this particular field of work. Getting involved doesn’t just help the organizations you’re with, it helps you find your inner passions that even you didn’t know about.

IT GIVES YOU THE CHANCE TO HAVE FUN.

Last, but definitely not least, getting involved on campus gives you the chance to have fun in college. Sure, the priority in college is to learn and make good grades, but that doesn’t mean you have to be miserable doing it. As long as you don’t slack in the classroom, college can be fun too. You get to be involved with all the welcome back events, multicultural events, homecoming, spring fling, and everything in between. Every day there is something new and exciting happening on campus. You just have to get out there and get involved. Anyone who ever said college was boring must have sat at home all day doing homework and binge-watching Netflix.

Now that you see some of the many positive things that come from being involved, get out of your bed and go start signing up now. You won’t regret it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
