Why You Should Download Countable

So you hate politics. That's okay. In one aspect or another, everyone has their qualms about our current political climate. But if you're paying any attention to the news at all, you know that now more than ever it is important to not only have a thorough understanding of what is happening in our country but also voice your opinions with the intent to affect change. One way that people are trying to do just that is with an app called Countable.

The app's goal is give you access to all of the bills and pieces of legislation that are being put up to a vote in Congress, and shows you them in a way that is simple and easy to understand. You can read summaries of legislation that are active or upcoming, as well as read explanations as to why people vote yes and no. It gives you both sides of the issue, presenting you with a balanced description so that you can form your own educated and informed opinion.

When you sign up, Countable uses the zip code that you provide to not only show you who your representatives are, but also allow you to get in contact with them and voice your opinions with the touch of a button. You can tell your representatives how you want them to vote, whether or not you think they should vote yea or nay. You can read biographies and get background information on elected officials, and essentially, hold them accountable for their votes and how you believe they are representing you. You can even customize Countable to show you pieces of legislation that address matters that are important to you.

It's not hard in this day and age to get caught up in the negativity that is politics. It is easy to sit back and let others do the work and hope for the best. I know that as a college student, I often read the news on my Twitter feed and talk to other people about what's going on, but that's usually where it ends. We think that there is nothing that we can truly do to make a difference, but that is so far from true. Even the smallest step and the tiniest effort can leave a lasting impact, and that kind of attitude and effort is what our country needs now more than ever.

You can keep up with what's going on in our government and use your voice to make a difference, all in one easy to reach place. So what are you waiting for? Download Countable for free. Do your part. Speak up.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
