Why You Should Celebrate Your 21st Birthday In New Brunswick

Obviously celebrating your 21st birthday is a huge deal. 21 years is an important milestone in one's life and deserves to be commemorated. In the United States, the legal drinking age is 21, which excites many people and makes them want to go out to the bars. However, my friends call me a grandma, and since I was not planning on doing anything special for my birthday, they had to convince me to go bar hopping around each of the New Brunswick bars that night. However, I am so happy that I did! If you are a Rutgers student and already turned 21, then I am sure you know that celebrating your birthday in New Brunswick is a must! However, if you have yet to turn 21, then you must take my advice and celebrate your 21st in New Brunswick, one of the most lively college towns there is! Here's why:

The Bars.

There are multiple bars to bar-hop at on your special night (and even after) full of loud music, happy college students, and drinks. Rutgers is great because you have way more than one option. If you don't like one bar, you can move right on to the next.

Free Drinks.

It's your birthday! You shouldn't have to take your wallet out once. On my birthday, I had so many drinks at one point I didn't know what to do with all of them!

The people.

Once people find out it is your birthday, they will serenade you with the "happy birthday" song. If you are wearing a crown or sash, you'll get even more attention. However, be prepared for your friends to announce to the place that it is your birthday!

Fishbowls.

Before I turned 21, I was mesmerized by Stuff Yer Face's Fishbowl drinks. They come in shades of electric blues and bright oranges. The "bowl" that they come in is huge! My friends were buying me these extra large drinks left and right. They are delicious, and make for a super cute picture! However, with each one containing a whopping 11 shots, you need to be careful with these sugary drinks.

The Free T-Shirts.

This is the best part about celebrating your 21st birthday in New Brunswick! Everyone kept telling me "you're going to get so many free t-shirts on your 21st birthday!" I never understood why this was, but I really did end up with a lot of free t-shirts. My first stop of the night was Peter's Liquors on Easton Avenue to pick up a few pre-going out drinks. The man behind the counter saw that it was my birthday and gave me my first free t-shirt of the night! At each bar, it was clearly evident that it was my birthday and the bar tenders all gave me free shirts! Luckily I had one of my friends hold them for me all night or else I would have certainly lost them on the streets of New Brunswick.

New Brunswick is home of Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey. Aside for being academically excellent, Rutgers is a huge party school! Celebrating my 21st in this college town was unforgettable. Between my friends who came out with me, and the college students at the bars, everyone made me feel beyond special. 21 years is something to celebrate (and drink to) which is why I highly suggest celebrating in your beloved college town. You won't be disappointed.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
