12 Reasons Why You Should Go On Birthright

I was told Birthright would be "the best 10 days of my life." I was told that I'd make great friends that would last me a lifetime and that this experience would be unforgettable. At first, I saw it as simply a free trip to Israel, and for a lover of travel, that was already enough to convince me to go. But I learned, throughout the 10 days, that it was so much more than "a free trip to Israel" or just a "vacation." I soon learned there are so many more reasons why going on Birthright is a great decision.

1. It's free

As a mostly broke college student with a thirst for adventure, a free trip to a foreign country is, no question, a great idea. You'll save on airfare, hotel costs, food, and everything else.

2. Camels

There are plenty of people that can say they've ridden a horse. But how many people can say they've ridden a camel?

3. The ultimate camping experience

Sleeping in the Bedouin tents was one of the best and worst experiences of my life. If you've ever felt like you missed out on a real camping experience, then sleeping in the Bedouin tents will by far make up for that loss. Make sure to look up at the stars late at night. It's an unbelievable sight.

4. The dead sea

You can float for days and never drown, your skin is exfoliated to perfection, need I say more? Plus you can put as much mud on you as possible, and it'll wash right off, giving you that perfectly smooth, soft skin. Don't forget the iconic picture of you and your friends covered in the Dead Sea mud.

5. Education

You will gain a much clearer understanding of your Jewish culture and religion in just these few short days. You will learn so much about the history, the people, the culture and more of Israel.

6. The views

This trip is the ultimate photo-op. From pictures in the Dead Sea to Mount Masada, the skyline of Tel-Aviv, and more. You really appreciate how beautiful your surroundings are and how beautiful the country is.

7. Jewish ties

You might bump into childhood friends, distant relatives, and more just in these ten days. It's amazing how closely connected you are to other Jewish peers, and this is definitely evident on Birthright.

8. The jewelry

If you don't have that basic hamsa choker necklace, then are you even Jewish? But seriously, Israel is heaven for jewelry lovers. I have never bought so much jewelry in such a short time span.

9. The Israeli soldiers

Before this trip, I didn't know much about the Israeli soldiers. But after, I gained a greater appreciation and admiration for everything they do for their country. They are some of the most kind, smart and passionate people you will meet.

10. New adventures

Birthright is the perfect opportunity to unleash your love for adventure. From hiking to camel riding, trying new foods, discovering historic sites, floating in the Dead Sea, or exploring the streets of foreign and ancient cities. Birthright is the ultimate culmination of adventure. It was so thrilling to experience something so beyond anything I've seen before.

11. The food

Personally, I wasn't the biggest fan of Israeli food, but for people who love to try new foods, this trip will definitely allow you to do so. You might even gain a newfound love for falafel and/or shawarma. But make sure to savor all of it, because the United States will not have as much falafel and shawarma.

12. The friendships

This was truly my favorite part about the trip. I was told I would make lifelong friendships, and quite frankly, I didn't believe that. But this trip proved me wrong and exceeded my expectations. You and your bus will become a family. You will make connections that will last you so long. I have never become so close to people so fast in my life. Having the opportunity to share such an incredible experience with new, amazing people, is by far the best part.

Birthright was an incredible experience for me, and I encourage you to sign up for it, with no doubt in your mind, that it will be just as incredible for you!

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
