At some point in your life, you have probably listened to the radio. Listening to the radio is entertaining, but the best part is what goes on in radio production, especially on college campuses.

Joining a college radio station is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even if you aren’t planning on working in broadcast, it is good to experience new things.

Working with a campus radio station, in particular, is a great way to meet all kinds of people who have the same interest as you. You also get to work on an amazing radio voice in the meantime.

So, before you decide to turn down the radio, here are some reasons why you should consider being a part of your school’s radio station:

1. Having your own radio show.

How many of your friends can say that they’ve had an on-air talk show before?

One of the best reasons to be a part of your campus radio station is for the fact that you can have your own radio show!

This is an hour out of your week where you can go on air and talk on nearly any topic you want. It doesn’t matter if 100 people are listening or if it’s just your mom who you asked to tune in. It feels good to get your voice out to the public.

Scared to talk on air? That’s understandable, but after a few shows, you will start to feel like a professional.

2. Learning beyond the soundboard.

The great thing about radio stations is that it’s not always just about being on air! There are so many opportunities to look for within the radio station.

You can be on the radio’s executive board, volunteer to help with various activities, DJ at events and much more. The radio can be just about anything you want!

3. Holding an executive position.

Being on the air can be a lot of work, but the real glue that holds the station together is within the efforts of the executive staff. This special group of people perform the “behind the scenes” work that is put into the radio.

What is great about the executive staff is the diversity of each staff member’s roles. You don’t have to be an expert on radio production to be a staff member. There are positions like advertising sales, public relations manager and social media manager that are just as important.

There is no greater bond than what the executive staff has. They work hard so that the radio station runs smoothly.

4. Making awesome playlist suggestions.

Love music? Want to hear your favorite kind of music on the radio? All you have to do is talk to the radio station staff, and you can make an awesome playlist.

The great thing about student radio stations is the diversity in music. There is practically music for everyone, and an expanding song list in never a bad thing!

5. Getting to meet band members.

If meeting bands is your thing, then you have no reason not to be a part of your school’s radio station. You can meet some really awesome bands through your access with the station whether it’s band concerts in or outside of school. Getting to meet the creators behind incredible music is a great feeling.

6. Having a cool space to work in.

Radio stations are an awesome environment. There is a soundboard that looks official (because it is), microphones, headphones, different rooms to record in and even records hanging on the wall. Radio stations are a great place to check out and see where all of the on-air magic is made.

7. Knowing you are surrounded by people who love the radio just as much as you do.

The absolute best part about working with the radio station, though, is the people you get to surround yourself with. There is no one else who appreciates what the radio does more than those who work at the station.

So, don’t give up the opportunity to join your school’s radio station!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
