What It Means To Be A Foodie
Ilana Mekler

Foodie: (Noun)- A person with particular interest in food.

I like to think of myself as one. Why? Because I love trying new foods and I love food in general, of course. After a while, going to the same couple of restaurants over and over again becomes very routine and boring and I wanted to venture out and break away from that regular custom. If you are looking to embrace your inner foodie, I advise you to Google local "mom and pop" places or even just random restaurants that you have never even been to near your home, you will be surprised to see what you can find.

I follow a few food accounts on Instagram and those pages inspire me to go out and explore my surroundings. When you do this, not only will you discover new foods and cultures, but you might see more of where you live than you normally do. For example, I am not a huge Mexican food person but I have recently become obsessed with this place called Cabo Flats. They have a few locations, but it's not extremely well known....to my knowledge. They have this amazing Taco Tuesday deal where you pay around $15 for unlimited tacos so I pretty much go there and eat my feelings. So. Good. If you are on vacation, do not go to a Denny's or Olive Garden. Try looking up restaurants that have been on television or something that maybe Oprah recommended because Oprah knows everything.

Being a foodie gives you ideas for when you want to try new things to make in the kitchen if you are the type of person who likes to create dishes and such. If you are looking to spice up your cooking skills or culinary knowledge, the foodie life is the right path to follow. Now, I know that the term "foodie" has a negative connotation and people automatically assume everyone who claims they are a foodie has a beard and instagrams their every meal. Let me reassure you that is not me, I do not have a beard.

I find that the more obscure the food, the better the quality. The food may not necessarily be healthy all the time, but at least you can say you tried something new. Now, I am not one of those people who get too crazy and start eating cow's tongue or anything like that because the thought of that honestly makes me want to throw up.

Being a foodie is like a win-lose-win. Will I gain 50 pounds? Maybe, but it is so worth it because the chances to try something out of the ordinary are very small. I want to look back on my life one day and say, "I'm so glad I ate that donut with bacon on it or that I ate 6 tacos by myself." Get to searching around, grab a few friends, and explore! If you want to be foodie with me, I am accepting applications.
