Everyone is aware of the great excitement and tradition that comes with college football and basketball. Tailgating, cheering your team on to victory, and trash-talking your rival schools is one of the greatest experiences of college.
However, as I've found out since I've come to college, none of these sports compare to the experience of attending college baseball games.
Here's just a few reasons why:
The weather - Those beginning season football games start out excruciatingly hot and by the end of the year, it seems that all games have all been shifted to the Arctic Circle. There really seems to be no middle ground in terms of temperature. Baseball, on the other hand, begins right before spring starts and arrives perfectly with the shifting weather. It's extremely rare to go to a college baseball game and not be in perfect weather conditions. It seems like the baseball gods always want to insure perfect weather for its participants.
Parity - At the beginning of any football or basketball season, there are usually only about 10-15 teams that actually have a shot at winning the championship. In baseball, that number is increased exponentially. Teams that you may have never even heard of (Fresno State, Rice, Wichita State) might very well win the whole thing at the end of the year. If you happen to go to a school with a subpar baseball program, there is still hope. Upsets in baseball are common and accepted so you can't skip a game because you know your team "will get blown out." There's always a chance for the underdog.
Dates - Football and basketball games are terrible for romantic dates. Loud students packed in tight really kill the vibe. This is where baseball comes in. Not only is the seating extremely relaxed, but the pace of play leads itself to more conversation between spectators. Attention doesn't always have to be on the game, but any awkward silences can be broken up by commenting on the game. Food prices are also more reasonable at baseball games, so guys paying for a snack or two won't have their pockets burned.
Nostalgia - Almost everyone who attends college has some memory of playing or watching baseball when they were younger. Baseball is truly able to bring out fond memories better than almost any other sport. Its called "America's Pastime" for no other reason than because it has great tradition in this country. Eating peanuts and singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" will transfer you to a different era of the United States' history.
Cute Baseball Players - I can't personally attest to this, but I've heard from many girls that the reason they love going to baseball games is to watch the hot guys baseball players on the field. If you're a guy wanting to convince a girl to go to the game with you, try this line.
Outfield Festivities & Shenanigans - Most teams have a particularly dedicated fan following from people who choose to sit behind the fences in the outfield. These areas, usually not under the jurisdiction of the athletic department (or with loosely enforced restrictions), are full of copious amounts of booze, food, and fun people. There really is no comparison to any other sport. Get a unique perspective of the sport and sit behind the fences.
Omaha - No college sport has a city that means as much to it as Omaha means to college baseball. The official home of the College World Series has become an annual summer destination for fans and visitors of baseball alike. The mixture of friendly people, good food, and summer weather perfectly sums up all the great things of American culture. Every college sports fan must visit it at least once.
