Why You Should Always Follow Your Heart

Life is too short to not do what makes you happy.

Why You Should Always Follow Your Heart

Life is short and you shouldn't waste your precious time doing something that your heart truly does not desire. This can be applied to any situation — a job, a relationship, a degree, or wherever you are in life in general. Some people just do what they are told and whatever it takes to get by, but that is not how you should live your life. Everyone deserves to be happy and live their life to the fullest and I believe that by following your heart you will get that.

Here's the thing — your head and your heart are almost always going to be going back and forth with each other if you are in a situation that you are not 100 percent sure about. For example, say you jump into a relationship with someone too soon after a break-up just to keep your mind away from the person that you just lost — your mind and your heart are going to be in a constant debate. Why? Your head is going to try to talk you into all the reasons why you should stay. Your heart is always going to fight for what you really want, though. Say you just took a job that you didn't really want but they were going to pay you better. If you aren't really happy there and you aren't doing it for the right reasons, then you will spend your days in a constant internal battle. This goes for anything.

The battle is the worst part because it's strictly you. You are all alone with your thoughts. Your head is overthinking it, all of it. Trying to come up with a million and one reasons why what you are doing is the right thing. Your heart is all of your true feelings, trying to get your attention and tell you to run. Back out now, while you can before it gets too messy. Your heart truly knows what you want. And while you might think that going with your head is the smarter move because it's been thought out, it's not necessarily the best decision. Why? Because you are dancing around the truth and trying to convince yourself of something you know isn't true or right in your heart.

If your heart isn't in something, don't do it. It's going to be hard, because if you are like me then you hate giving up and letting people down. But I can promise you that those around you would rather you be invested in something that you can give your all to than to something you aren't totally sold on.

You should always follow your heart because it will take you places you never thought possible. Your heart will always chase after your dreams, and whether things work out in the end or not, you got to experience the feeling of following your heart. Your heart will make you happier than anything ever can. It is your source of joy and love, the center of your desires.

Your heart knows you. It knows your darkest secrets and guilty pleasures. It knows your greatest wants and desires. It knows how you truly feel. So listen to it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
