There are very few bands/artists I have an absolutely admirable infatuation with, but Twenty-One Pilots stole my heart the second I heard Tyler Josephs voice. Here are my top reasons why I myself and many others, are so fond of the duo.
1. They do not identify with with just one genre; actually they don't exactly have a specific genre at all, meaning a large array of different melodies and sounds; Also meaning they can capture the attention of multiple different music lovers, which doesn't only benefit them, but us as the listeners as well. I can put my Twenty-One Pilots Spotify radio station on and get a mix of hip-hop, indie pop, rock, electropop and even sometimes they throw in a bit of a reggae sound. They are like the Melting Pot of bands.
2. Their lyrics speaks to not only me but thousands of others in a very particular and vulnerable way. A quote from their song "Message Man" reads: "these lyrics aren't for everyone, only few understand". The Duo's Albums Vessel and Blurryface touched a few different forms of mental illness that a lot of us battle everyday within' ourselves (Panic/Anxiety dissorders, Depression, etc.) but at the same time, offer us reassuring lyrics that we are not in fact alone when it comes to immense depression and the feeling of hopelessness. Which brings me to my next point.
3. This time last year I was battling severe depression to the point of high contemplations of suicide. Around the same time the darkness consumed me, I found Twenty-One Pilots. When I say this, I am not stating it lightly: their music absolutely saved my life, and not only did it save mine but as I looked further into them I found forums after forums of people sharing their stories of how the duo's music and lyrics saved their lives as well. With each song I was reassured that I wasn't alone in this battle and that millions of other souls out there were fighting the same fight; and for some reason that kept me going. A few of the songs on this list would be, "Migraine", "Doubt", "Holding onto you", "Guns for Hands", "Not Today" " Heavydirtysoul", "Kitchen Sink" and "Car Radio".
4. Tyler Jospeh, the voice of Twenty-One Pilots is as talented and creative as they come. The man plays the Ukulele, Piano, Key Board, Synthesizers, Bass, the Accordion and the Tambourine; not to mention he alternates between a few of these instruments in one song quite often. On top of all of that, his vocals range from C3 - F#5 [ 2 Octaves 3 Notes 1 Semitone ] which is exquisitely impressive among us fellow vocalists. He is soft spoken yet can belt vocals at an immense rate, along with adding his edge of semi-scream.
5. They take care of their fans. Everyone always wants the chance to meet and greet with one of their favorite bands but its not always an option offered and definitely not always afforable if it is offered. Twenty-One Pilots went about this in a magnificent way. If it is rational, depending on the show, the first 52 peoples in line get free meet and greet passes. I know when I get the pleasure of seeing them live (once they stop selling out so quickly) I will be camping out a day ahead of time to ensure I am one of those first 52 people in line.
6. Last but not least: LOOK AT THOSE FACES. How could you possibly resist?
