If you're looking for a new teen/adult drama to get obsessed with, I've found the perfect show for you! Riverdale is a new show that aired in late January on The CW. It's a murder mystery show that is based off of the classic Archie Comic characters, Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and many more. It combines an exciting plot, a charming town and diner, and realistic and beautifully flawed characters to create a wonderful synergy.
If you need a new show, look no further!
1) It's a new take on an old story.
First debuting in the 1940's, the Archie Comic characters have been involved in the same kinds of antics for ages. The plots included the never-ending love triangle of Archie, Betty, and Veronica, Jughead's comedic relief for the friend group, and endless tales of clumsy and complicated everyday life. The major difference between the comics and the show is that it has been spun into an intense murder mystery. Although the show still contains the same heart, comedy, and basics of the characters, a new interesting plot has been factored in. It's attention grabbing and fresh.
2) It has mystery, romance, comedy, and drama.
A deadly combination, if I may say so (pun intended). The show has a little bit for everyone, but mainly targets teens and young adults. Along with the consistent mystery of who murdered their classmate, Archie, Jughead, and the rest of the gang are going through the awkward and tough everyday obstacles that high school provides. Betty's mom is putting too much pressure on her, Veronica's dad is on trial for financial crimes, and Jughead and Archie are just back from a fight. People are bound to relate to at least one of the characters and want to go through this journey with them.
3) It puts a strong emphasis on friendship coming first.
While the love triangle between Archie, Betty, and Veronica is certainly prominent in the new show, there is an emphasis on the girls' friendship. They decided that their bond is too important to break over a guy, and vow to support and care for each other. This new take on the friendship is the ultimate testament to girl power and the importance of supporting each other. Not only is Betty and Veronica's friendship stressed, but Jughead and Archie are trying to repair their own when the show begins. Jughead wants Archie to be honest and true to himself, and Archie himself is working on that and on defending his friend from some harsh bullying. Overall, the biggest theme of the show is friendship and how people change and grow together.
4) It sheds light on the fact that everything isn't always how it seems at first glance.
Riverdale is a small town. At first glance, many think of small towns as peaceful, quiet places, but this show digs deeper. It examines the everyday difficulties and pressures these families and students endure, and how they are affected. The characters are very realistic and honest portrayals that make for an extremely relatable show all around.
5) Have I mentioned the obsession-worthy cast yet?
Most of us will remember Cole Sprouse from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Not only is he absolutely swoon-worthy now, but the rest of the cast is just as much. Not only are they entertaining on-screen, but in behind-the-scenes footage from social media, their friendships are just as real and they have an amazing sense of humor. They are the ultimate team and are very connected to their characters and the show. Lili Reinhart, who portrays Betty on the show, is actually from Cleveland, Ohio, not far from our own state!
6) It pays tribute to the classic comics.
Growing up I adored reading Archie Comics. As an adult now, I can't explain how much I geeked out when I discovered this show! It's like the characters grew up with me and the plots they are put into have matured with me, as well. It's the same group of quirky characters in an entirely new environment, which brings a fresh idea to life with a classic team and company.
How could you turn down a show with all of these amazing qualities? You can't! So tune in to The CW on Thursdays at 9:00pm to catch this show. If you need to catch up, be sure to find the previous episodes on www.cwtv.com.
