We all know Snapchat, the picture-sharing app used to send awkward selfies to friends and to post stories that you hope your crush will watch. But what if it could be used for so much more? What if you could add some sentimental value to those five second glimpses into your fun, chaotic, and sometimes messy personal life? Guess what: you can.
A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine told me she and some of her friends at school had decided to make a second Snapchat for themselves. At first, I was a little lost. Did you lose your password? Did you change your username? Wait, does that mean the embarrassing picture I sent to you ten minutes ago actually went to someone completely different?! Luckily for everyone involved, that was not the case. My friend was not some clueless person who had managed to completely forget both her username and password. Actually, she was kind of a genius.
See, the idea behind making a second Snapchat account isn't to use it as a form of communication, it's to use it as a form of documentation. Instead of staying logged in after creating your second account, you're supposed to write down your username and password somewhere safe (because in all honesty forgetting both is a very real possibility), add your original account as a friend, log out of your new account, and then log back into your original account. From there, you add your new Snapchat as a friend. Then, throughout the year, you send snaps to your new account that would typically be posted to your story or sent to friends. The result? At the end of the year you have a whole collection of memories to look back on, some that you may have even forgotten completely.
Bottom line: if you already have a Snapchat, then you know how it works. It takes almost no time to send a snap to one extra person, and it's free to create an account. This means that for very minimal effort on your part, you can create a simple way to document your year. Whether it be to reminisce and get all sentimental or to laugh at all of your misadventures and poor life choices, this is by far one of the simplest ways to keep track of your year to look back on. That being said, January is almost ove - time to drop what you're doing and get snapping!
