Growing up just north of NYC, baseball is a pretty big deal to native New Yorkers. I am a Yankees fan and have been my whole life, and if you’re from New York, Yankees and Mets fans treat each other like they are rivals even though they are not. Everyone knows that a Yankees fans worst enemy is a Red Sox fan but if there was a second type of fan to have altercations with, it would be a fan whose favorite team plays a subway ride away from the Bronx--The Mets.
Yankees fans should have rooted for the Mets in the World Series simply because it’s been 29 years since they won a World Series. The Yankees win all the time, which is why they have 27 World Series Championships in their history. Though they haven’t won since 2009, the Mets still compete at a very high level every year. Just give credit to the Mets for making the playoffs this year and going this far--they deserved it.
Another interesting point is the Mets won the World Series 29 years ago in 1986, but it was because of Bill Buckner who was the first baseman for the Boston Red Sox who missed the biggest “can of corn” play probably ever, in baseball history, so I usually say the Mets didn’t win, but that the Red Sox just lost and that sparks many flames.
I did hope the Mets would win this year partly so that I wouldn’t have to hear Mets fans complain about why they never win. It does, admittedly, get annoying. There’s a stereotype in NY that if you are a Mets fan you are automatically a Jets fan and to this day I contemplate whether they like winning or not, but that’s none of my business. It seems like they are just so used to losing that it is almost second nature to them at this point. But they still stand by their teams for some reason, and that can be respected.
Although the Mets didn’t win this year, if they make it to the World Series again, I hope we can all stand and support them!
