Why Writing Is Great

"You can make anything by writing..." - C.S. Lewis

I always hear people say “I hate writing papers..” or “Writing is stupid..” or “what’s the point of writing anyways..?” To answer those complaints, writing is not a complete waste of time. The more you write, the better you get at it. I hate writing papers for my classes too, trust me. Writing papers for school is a tedious process that only makes one more miserable. When you’re forced to write about a subject that you didn’t choose, you tend to despise it so much that you leave it for the last minute. But I’m not here to tell you about the horror of writing papers for classes, I’m here to tell you the greatness of writing.

You’re probably thinking, “What? Why would writing ever be great?" That’s a great question. Writing like art is another form of expression using words instead of paint. It just depends on the way you use it or look at it. Writing isn’t just for English classes, it’s also used in the real world whether it’s magazines, newspapers, blogs, articles, books, novels, diaries, and so on. If it weren’t for writing, you wouldn’t be reading about the latest gossip on the Kardashian family or Angelina Jolie’s filing for divorce. Writing is everywhere whether you realize it or not. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram use writing in these platforms whether it’s updating your status, tweeting, or a creating caption for your photo. The interesting part about this is that we don’t see it as writing anymore because it’s not forced upon us like English papers. We’re actually interested in the writings of these people who write in all these platforms.

If reading about the latest gossip isn’t enough to convince you, how about a diary or a book you love? Many people keep diaries, but most deny it. A diary is so beneficial for soul healing. Honestly, you can’t keep everything inside you otherwise, you will explode in the wrong moment with the wrong person. People have different ways of dealing with emotions whether its crying, writing, painting, or whatever it may be. Writing about your feelings is so relieving. All that anger gets written so fiercely on the pages that you can’t stop until you feel better. Once the pen touches the page controlling your hand becomes nearly impossible because sometimes only paper will listen to you.

While writing out your feelings is relieving, reading an incredible story can lead you to experience someone else’s world. When you read a book, you don’t usually think about the effort it took the author to come up with the story and write it. We just think “Oh, this book looks interesting, let me read it.” If there was no writer, then there would be no book in your hand. Writing a novel, a love story, science fiction isn’t an easy task to come by. It takes long hours of creative thinking, character development, scene development to come up with these books. The best part of being a writer of books is to see readers enjoy what you write. It’s the greatest accomplishment for the hard work that was put in to make such a masterpiece.

Maybe reading books isn’t really your forté, there are other forms of writing that can be used to express yourselves. For example, this article is a form of writing. I started writing for Odyssey because I want my voice to be heard and to see if people enjoy what I write. It’s nice when I get a lot of shares it means that people enjoy my writing and it inspires me to write more. Writing articles can be very informative for people and you can always learn new things from other people. An article can change your life and give you a different point of views. My main purpose for writing on this platform is the hope that I can change a life. Now get up and start writing because together we can change a lot of things just by letting ourselves be heard.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
