When I first stumbled upon applying for a position to write for the Odyssey, it was an accident. I had always loved finding different articles that I saw were shared on Facebook and reading one, after another, after another. One day, on the website I clicked on a button, then another and then another and eventually I was at an application, an application I had no intent on being on, but I filled it out.
The funny thing is that I was never a writer and when I say that, I mean it. English was always my worst subject, essays were the bane of my existence and don’t even get me started on how me even writing one sentence down was like pulling teeth, but something told me to do it. I had prayed weeks before that the Lord would lead me to do something that glorified him and something deep down told me this was it. I got called one day by a very sweet lady in New York (My first Managing Editor) and surprisingly became the Editor-In-Chief for my school.
Being that I was the first one to join, I had the job of building my team and getting more people to join. I have many people to thank for the help of getting SGSC off the ground, because I couldn’t have done it by myself.
In the past couple of months of working with the Odyssey, I have learned many things I otherwise probably would not have. I have learned how to lead a team of pretty amazing people and that behind the scenes there is a lot more than meets the eye. I have met and made connections with people that I have met through the Odyssey and have formed some pretty amazing bonds with them that I hope can carry on for years to come.
I have also learned more about me as a person. I have been exposed to many different views, thoughts and voices. I have saw first-hand how the Odyssey can get voices out, that are otherwise not heard and I have read many that I have changed the way I view things and broadened my spectrum.
The Odyssey is not just a website or a social content platform that you sometimes see shared on Facebook. It is so much more.
