Why Women All Over The World Are Calling Themselves 'Nühanzi'
The Desert Violet Blog

The topic of feminism is a widely-known movement. The world is beginning to change, and is seeing the light of equality. Although it still has a long way to go, we are changing things. The men and women of the world that believe that women should be afforded the same rights as men are causing a shake in the patriarchy.

I was recently asked in an interview with a friend “if you could write a book, what would you write about?” Although I'd never given an in-depth thought to this question before, my answer was almost immediate. My response was that I would travel the world and write about women everywhere who are redefining their culture. I would collect stories of women who deal with sexism and who are fighting for women's rights. I would fill my book with stories of bravery that women have endured to reach their country, and even family. Brave women. That is what the world needs in order to make a difference.

I have had the pleasure of being introduced to Nühanzi, a community of love and strength focused on empowering women and girls. Creator Allison Haunss has made a beautiful clothing and awareness brand that focuses on the power and strength of women from everywhere.

Nühanzi is a name commonly used in China which women identify with when referring to themselves as “independent, candid and strong.” While some see the meaning as a manly woman or a tomboy -- a woman who thinks and acts like a man and is yet more than just an unceremonious woman, a lot of women view it as someone that believes in equality and strength. I would have to agree with the latter. The culture in China for centuries has depicted women as fair, quiet, dutiful and virtuous. Now, in modern-day China, women are standing up in groups at school and in the corporate world to declare a new wave of independence. As soon as I was introduced to the community, I knew that I had to work with them.

I am a #Nühanziwoman for many reasons. You don't have to live in China to identify as a Nühanzi. I believe that all women are born with a little Nühanzi in them. Despite centuries of contradiction, women are fierce. Inside every woman is a fighter. And I believe that when we come together in support of that, we create beautiful changes. Changes that should have been there in the first place. I encourage you to stand with me as a Nühanzi woman. Stand up for the beauty, strength, and independence we were born to have.

birthday party

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.

College Informations

Most of us have already started the spring semester, and for those of you who haven't started yet, you suck.

It seems like coming back from winter break wouldn't really be a break all things considered, since we all come back to school and pick up right where we left off. We know exactly what to expect, yet we're unprepared every single time.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

You know that all of these things apply to you. You'll just never tell.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
