I'm At A Loss

Why I Probably Will Not Vote In This Election

I'll say it again. I'm at a loss.

I am utterly sick of all the crap a presidential election brings with it. It brings out the absolute worst in so many people. It doesn't even matter that it happens every four years because it never ends. As soon as a president is elected, there are people already campaign for the next four years. It never ends. I am starting to want no part of it what so ever. Now hear me out and actually read before you jump to conclusions and make quick judgements. I know that every vote counts and how important it is to vote. I understand how lucky we are that we live in some sort of democratic republic country where individual votes kinda sorta mean something. I understand that and I advocate the same. However, what does one do when they do not like any of the choices presented before them? There is nothing saying I have to choose anything. I am thankful for that. Looking through history and actually analyzing presidential elections, campaigns and the whole idea of a party system, (which by the way has completely backfired ten fold, ie: there are more parties than states!) you will see that nothing has really changed. It is a popularity contest and the values of the position people are running are lost to endless foulness and vile actions. It has progressively gotten worst; in my opinion.

It seems that this whole idea of a leader governing a country has become a joke. We have a huge government with so many branches, departments, and offices and they aren't connecting at all. One person can not balance out an enormous bureaucracy of thousands of others all trying to do the same thing. I do not have any answer or even a rough speculation on how to fix that or what should be done to fix corruption and a government the size of a tidal wave. All I know is the current form which has been molded and amended and shaped over the last 200 years is starting to look like a sandcastle at high tide. It's facing an imminent danger without any regard for the rest of its citizens. It's going to wash away and all that's left is a lump of sand.

Some will argue that you should vote for the person you hate less or so that the party you don't like does not go into power. (But that is just playing into the same game over and over isn't it?) I understand that reasoning but I can not see choosing one criminal over another if both candidates are criminals. Both have committed crimes and both should not be put in a position of power. Therefore I will not choose either. I am sure with careful research and fact checking I may find who I believe to be the right candidate, but because this country is so hooked on making everything dualistic, my vote is no different than me standing on a street corner screaming my opinion. Sure, it is great I can do that if I wanted to, but who likes a lack of results?

So how does one get results? DO STUFF! It won't be easy. It will not happen overnight. It may never amount to something you physically grasp in your hand. So why should you do it? Because actions speak louder than words. This whole article is just words and really doesn't mean much. It's all an opinion. However, if I go and speak at a town meeting, hold a fund raiser, or run to get on my town council, those are actions. Perhaps a friend of mine goes and becomes an educator or social worker, those too are actions. Joining local government offices, police, or recuse forces is also a great endeavor. Basically, you need to change the system from the inside out. The people have the power. The people put the government in power so it's someone else responsibility. To remedy this, the people have to make the changes. This idea is as old as government itself. This idea does not come form Trump, Hilary, Bernie, John Lennon, MLK, Alan Watts, nor from any political party. Many people have said these words throughout history. It is just straight common sense. It has been said throughout history and I will say it now.

So, in my opinion, electing one leader over another will have no effect on making things better or worse. (Unless nuclear annihilation is imminent, all jokes aside.) Some people will choose to believe things are better and others will choose to believe they are worse. The way I see it is that all of that is subjective and the only way to make change is to do it yourself. Now many radicals do this though acts of fear, terror, and violence and that is not going to help anyone. No no, one should make changes that you know will benefit more than yourself. Do things that will bring about happiness for those you care about without hurting someone or putting people down.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
