Fashion is awesome. Fashion is art. We all take part in the wondrous, crazy beautiful world of fashion. OK, now that that is out of the way, I can also say that sometimes the industry can be hurtful. Especially the commercialism, which we see the most of. They tell us what to wear if we want to be accepted, but also sometimes it’s very contradictory.
Wear this. You’ll look more professional and you’ll be taken more seriously as a human being.
And then
No! Be yourself!! Your quirks make you unique!
??OK. And somehow this middle ground we get pushed in makes us all kind of the same, even when we’re trying to be different. Odd.
TLC's show "What Not To Wear" is hosted by Clinton Kelly and Stacy London, and they take “unfortunate” fashion cases and set them straight.
I don’t know, but I think this is really problematic.
They take these cases, and try to stick to that person’s taste and aesthetic when presenting them with the shops and places they should be buying clothing at.
But let’s take a look at one specific case from season 10, Megumi.
Here she is: looking adorable. These are the before pictures, and I personally see nothing wrong with them. She looks like a perfectly approachable, nice woman being herself.
Nope — Stacey and Clinton don’t agree that there’s no fault in what she wears. They dislike her "inability" to dress for her age. Ugh. So then they do what they do in each episode of "What Not To Wear," they go in her closet and start to throw away clothes they don’t want her to wear.
That’s another part of this show I absolutely hate. Do they actually throw away their clothing? I mean, if they do that’s pretty awful. Clothing can hold real sentimental value to a person, it’s one of the most personal items we own. And Stacey and Clinton get all butt-hurt when their 'case' gets upset about it. I really hope they do get to keep their old clothing…
Here they are presenting her with an outfit they want her to wear. It’s cute, ok. But it loses all of the charm she brings to that outfit she’s wearing in that same picture.
Here’s another outfit they hand picked for her. Also very cute. I’d wear it. I’d add it to my wardrobe. But, you know, my already existing wardrobe full of clothes that have memories and value.
Here is Megumi’s after picture. She looks great! But she did before, also. I just don’t understand why she had to change.
Looking at all their collective “after” photos, they kinda all look the same. Very corporate looking, like they’re all dressed to work in an office somewhere. Boring. Cute clothes, but ultimately, boring.
Now, here are some other “before” pictures of people they’ve tried to change.
Here’s Kathy. What’s wrong with Kathy. Nothing. She looks like the sweet Mom who makes cookies but can also dish over a glass of red wine. I want to know Kathy.
What about Jen? So she’s not showing a lot of skin. I don’t care. She looks comfortable and happy and that’s really all that matters. Go Jen.
Hey, Nicole! I honestly just want you to go ahead and rock the sweats and sneakers. Those are my favorite colors but they look great on you too.
And Simone. Yes. It does take balls to do what you do. Being an awesome, badass woman.
I’ve always disliked this show. But if you like it- that’s ok. That’s just you being you. But nobody should have to feel like they can’t be themselves. Nobody should be told that they’re not good enough, and there is a better-looking version of them. If you’re happy with yourself, then that’s all that matters. You’re not hurting anyone. Don’t let anyone tell you what not to wear.
