Why Welcome Week?

When you start your freshman year of college, it could seem scary and cause you to have fear of the unknown. When I first came to Southwest Baptist University they offer a thing called Welcome Week for new freshmen and transfer students, it gives them a chance to get use to SBU and meet new people.

But heres a list of things you could learn or experience during Welcome Week.

1. Meeting fellow classmates

Welcome week gives you a chance to meet students that you will spend the next four years with walking the same campus.

2. Getting to see the campus before your first day of classes

You're given a chance to tour the campus before that terrifying first day. Often times trying to find your first class of the day can be nerve-racking and awkward.

3. Being able to meet some professors in your major

During welcome week they give a breakout session that allows you to go meet professors in your department, and it gives you time to ask questions.

4. Not only do you get to meet professors in your major, but also other students

During the same breakout session, you'll be able to see and meet students who chose the same major that you'll be spending the next four years working on.

5. SBU brings a business fair

During this business fair, it allows you to learn about the businesses in Bolivar so you know what Bolivar has to offer!

6. Welcome Week offers service projects around the Bolivar Community!!

Another breakout session is that your group will go to either a church or a non profit organization and help out doing different projects for them. This is a good way to church hunt to find your home away from home.

7. SBU has an Annual event every year

The welcome week committee puts on an event for all the new students and the student leaders!

8. Meeting your RA

Often times before you even get to campus most of the time your Resident Assistant (RA) will send a text introducing themselves and allowing you to ask any questions you may have about dorm life.

9. Meeting people on your hall

Moving to college can seem scary but getting to come to campus a week before classes start is a good thing, because you get a chance to meet fellow classmates, your suite-mates and even your roommates ( if you don't already know how that are). Its always a good thing to meet the people on your hall, especially if they're upperclassmen, because often times they'll be willing to help if you truly need it!

10. Creating friendships

Everyones different when it comes to making friends, but often times you'll find someone in your welcome week group that you end up spending a lot of your first year with, and you'll suffer together! And others of you will end up spending your entire four years with that friend you've made!

All in all, Welcome Week is a good program for new students to attend for several reasons!

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
