One of the first college traditions I heard upon coming to LSU was our long-standing hate of the Crimson Tide football team at the University of Alabama. Not even knowing the real reason behind the rivalry, I always just found myself tagging along with all of the cheers and 'Bama hatred. I know I am not the only student who always found myself asking, “Why do we hate them, again?”
There is actually a lot more history to the rivalry than meets the eye. LSU and Alabama, both being a part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), have been playing each other since November of 1895. Yes, you read that correctly. Over 100 years! It was only natural that these two queen bees end up being frenemies.
The heat was definitely turned up in 2007, when the coach of the 2004 national championship team, Nick Saban (or should I say Nick "Satan”) became the new head coach for Alabama, a mere two years after he left Baton Rouge for the Miami Dolphins. Oh, so scandalous.
The home field of the Crimson Tide, Bryant-Denny Stadium, is the equivalent to our Death Valley, except of course not as deadly. Every year, the two schools meet for the matchup of the year to see who will take home the pride of saying they are the better school. No matter where you go, here in Baton Rouge, you are sure to find a sign or hear someone say, “Beat 'Bama” or “Roll Tigers!”
From the looks of it, this rivalry seems to be growing and will be around for some time to come. With that being said, that's always a Geaux Tigers!
