Feminism has been an immense part of history and continues to be an overarching topic of discussion. In this modern day, women still have to fight for their rights.
Susan B. Anthony and other suffragettes excluded black women and opposed black men from voting during the Women's Rights Movement which started in the mid-1800s. Although Anthony was an abolitionist and a loose friend of Fredrick Douglass, "I will cut off this right arm of mine before I will ever work or demand the ballot for the Negro and not the woman," Anthony once said.
Ida B. Wells, was a prominent figure in the women's rights movement who worked toward racial equality. She was an African-American journalist, sociologist, and suffragist who was also a leader of the Civil Rights Movement.Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were Black and Latina transwomen and drag queens who propelled the Stonewall Riots in 1969. Together, they were prominent figures at gay liberation marches as well as other activist actions. They co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a group dedicated to helping homeless young drag queens and transwomen of color.Feminism should not be a choice word to tote around as an accessory when it is only beneficial towards white women. A feminist cannot stay silent when women of color are earning less than them, when women of color are being killed based on the color of their skin and the religion that they preach, when women of color are being sexualized at such a young age for their own growing bodies.
A celebrity such as Taylor Swift who claims to be a die-hard feminist cannot avoid discussion of racial inequality within feminism. If an individual is there for the cause, they would not go silent and choose when to appear. Feminism is not a justification for a publicity stunt (e.g. Anaconda nomination -Swift v. Minaj Twitter "fight", Calvin Harris and dispute of song credit for "This Is What You Came For", Kanye's "Famous" lyrics). She has gained herself and her career as "America's Sweetheart" which is rather conflicting when she constantly plays the victim of any situation, regardless of whether she was directly involved or not.
Remember: A feminist is a person who stands up for ALL women so that they may achieve social, political, and economic equality between the sexes.
