I'll be honest -- I binge-watched "Scandal" within probably a month. "Scandal" is a show created by the incredible Shonda Rhimes, who is also responsible for shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away with Murder." In each one of these shows, there are unique aspects that are refined to each show specifically. In "Scandal," leading lady Olivia Pope is all about the philosophy of being a gladiator. When I first began watching the show, I wasn't sure what that really meant, or how it was entirely relevant to the show. But as I became obsessed with the series, the term stuck with me.
According to Olivia Pope, being a gladiator means that no matter how hard life knocks you down, you get back up and keep going. Being a gladiator means that no matter the situation, you must remember that you are a gladiator and you must keep going. Although most of us don't necessarily experience Pope's everyday battles, which include fixing problems in the White House and covering her client's dirty secrets, being a gladiator is something we can all remember to use in our lives.
I'm sure we've all experienced a time where we've felt rock bottom. We felt that the light at the end of the tunnel was becoming dimmer and dimmer. But that's all a part of life. By embracing Pope's gladiator attitude, rock bottom doesn't have to be our destination. We can find that light at the end of the tunnel and work and fight until we're basking in the bright light.
In life, there are going to be highs and lows. The most important thing to remember is that when we hit these lows, and even at the highs, remembering we are all gladiators will bring the motivation to keep going and embrace the strength we all have within us.
