I Believe We Should Be More Like Artists

No matter how unconventional your piece is, it is still respected and seen as valid art. As a society, that's how we should treat each other's beliefs and opinions.

I Believe We Should Be More Like Artists

In art, there is no norm. Contrasting views are a prominent factor in success. Unconventionality is embraced and there is no right or wrong way to go about it. In society, we spend too much time trying to belittle others' opinions in order to validate our own. Instead of highlighting the strengths of our perspectives, we very often resort to pointing out the downfalls of conflicting views. In art, there are so many different styles and approaches, just as there are views and perspectives in humanity. However, artists take a much different approach towards dissimilarities than we do in society.

When an artist sees a piece of work that differs from theirs, they do not come to the conclusion that the other piece of work holds less value or worth than their own. Instead, they challenge themselves to understand and grasp the differing concept and style that has been used. They understand that this piece of work serves a purpose. This method doesn't just help the artist grow, but it improves their own work by giving them a better understanding and knowledge of the many art forms besides the one they choose to express. They understand that their style is not a singular, correct ideal.

In my creative writing class, we each have a workshop day where we prepare a piece to read to the class and afterward we get constructive feedback from our peers. One thing that has remained consistent through each of the workshops is the openness and curiosity that is present in the audience members. We always take an interest in others' work in order to be able to improve on our own. One concept that has been ever-changing throughout many of the pieces presented is punctuation. Especially in poetry, there is technically no correct way to use punctuation. Punctuation, structure, grammar and style are all creative elements that the author can use in different ways to their advantage, or even decide not to use at all. Whatever the author decides to do is seen as their creative and unique style and what makes their work identifiable.

Straying from the norm is what makes art so beautiful- society should be the same. Our differences are what make us a melting pot and a blend of unique individuals. If we can learn to embrace the differences then we can accept that even though something may be "right" to us, it might not be to someone else and that is okay. It also doesn't mean that their view is not right. Let's make the world a form of art where standards are simply conceptions. Like artists, lets challenge ourselves to comprehend and appreciate opposing views rather than putting all of our energy into refuting them. The world would be much more productive if, like artists, we became more critical of ourselves and more considerate of others.

We should be more like artists not just for society, but for ourselves. Realizing the worth in other perspectives can help you realize more about your own. Tolerance will help you grow and learn more than you ever thought you could. Let's stop evading those who don't see eye to eye with us. Challenge yourself today and learn something about someone else's outlook. After all, it's just another form of art.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
