And why even amongst our country's divisiveness, we can hopefully band together here.

Usually whenever there is a worldwide event coming up, particularly one involving the US and competition, we see a lot of hype about it. Commercials, people making patriotic posts on facebook, interviews with people that we care about every 4 years:

(Granted, if you don't care about Shaun White, that just ain't right.)

Anyways, I find it odd that I haven't seen very much coverage (at least relative to other years), about the Olympics. Granted, one of the reasons for this is that the NHL made a decision to allow any of it's players to attend, meaning that for Olympic hockey we will get to see- for the most part- a bunch of second rate guys along with a few intriguing prospects. The exception to this is Russia, who despite being banned from the Olympics, is sending a team that should be the heavy favorite to win. While that could potentially lead to one of the more prominent Olympic sports being effectively boring, it also sets us up for another potential 1980 Olympic moment:

Another nice local story is that Jordan Greenway, a junior for Boston University, will be playing for team USA at the Olympics, and between him and Troy Terry, they represent the only intrigue amongst the USA team. On the other hand, he is the first African-American to compete for team USA in hockey, and while this shouldn't be the case considering there are multiple talented African-American players in the NHL, it is still pretty damn cool.

Anyways, there is a large host of storylines that one could use to get excited for the Olympics, and I hope that we can use this event to hopefully bring us together, at least temporarily, in what has been a pretty damn divisive year within our country.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
