Why We Should Appreciate Different Music Genres

Everyone has their favorites, but I'm sure most of you would be pleasantly surprised by what else is out there.

I feel like everyone out there hates at least one specific type of music. A bunch of my friends really loathe country, then there’s the heavy metal haters, the people who despise pop, those that detest rap, those who undervalue rock and roll, and people like myself who really don’t quite understand EDM. It’s okay to not like everything, obviously everyone has their favorites. I’d say mine are pop punk, classic rock, anything Taylor swift (obviously if you know me), and then some other stuff that falls somewhere in-between. Although I don’t like everything, I feel like I’ve gained an appreciation for what’s out there, and I feel like others should too.

For example, I know if my friends gave country more of a chance they’d figure out the artists within the genre that they like, and find that although they may not like all of it, there are things within every genre for everyone. I grew up listening to my parents music which is how I learned to love classic rock, and I’ll definitely want to leave a musical impact on my own kids someday, but once I started getting into my own music, which was more current day, it opened my parents up to it as well. I know that it helped them gain an appreciation for current day music just like I did their music.

My friends definitely had an impact on my music taste. I never would’ve gotten into pop punk if it wasn’t for them, and it never would’ve opened my eyes to the number of possibilities that exist in the music world. I don’t love rap but I like some and I don’t love heavy metal but I’ve become more open to it, and when you have that attitude you may be surprised by what you like.

It startles me when someone says they don’t really like music. Like how do you not like music? I feel like music is a part of my soul and my everyday being. Sorry didn’t mean to get so deep there. Anyway, I feel like music is a way that many people define themselves. I know it used to be that a certain type of music went along with the way one dressed and portrayed him/herself to the outside world. I’d say it’s not that extreme anymore and that’s ok because it certainly shouldn’t be. We should open ourselves up to the limitless music that’s out there instead of just letting one type define our whole being.

Everyone will always have their favorites and that’s perfectly great, but don’t forget about the rest that’s out there. The more different types of music you know, the more people you can connect with and the better-rounded of a person you could become as a result. After all, music is the only TRUE universal language.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
