Idolizing the past. Damn. One minute you are fine, happy, completely good. The next you smell an old scent, realize you have no idea what you're doing with your life, or just think about that time you thought you were really "happy." All of a sudden you're half a bottle of wine deep, scrolling so far back through your pictures you hardly recognize yourself or your eyebrows. Yes, while it is so easy to harp on your ex, your old job, your hometown, your old friends, blah blah blah, it is in no way healthy. Taking away from the present is taking away from the future, and honestly, ain't nobody got time for that.
Here's a few little tidbits why:
1) It annoys everyone we talk to.
Nothing is more irritating than someone who is not over something. You will drive away all your friends and no one will want to talk to you. Seriously.
2) It makes you MISERABLE.
There is nothing worse than feeling like you made a wrong turn somewhere and have ended up in a hopeless pit of despair based on one decision. You will drive yourself right into a puddle of sadness if you keep thinking this. Everyone's lost. No one knows what they are doing. Listen to "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow," from the hit Broadway musicalAnnie. It will do wonders for your determination. At least I felt determined when it came on halfway through "Musicals Power Hour."
3) You will never be focused on the now if you're still thinking about the then.
Think about it. If you are in the corner of a party waving around an empty bottle of wine and crying about that guy you loved but never actually dated two years ago, you will drive away any and all potential suitors. (Not speaking from personal experience or anything). Guys are getting better and better at spotting Crazy a mile away. You could miss Prince Charming if you're too busy blacked out and talking about something long gone.
4) Nothing was ever as good as you think it was.
I cannot stress this enough. Give it time. Time heals all. You're always going to have problems, but it's your job to solve those problems and not let them follow you around for all eternity.
5) You have a lot more to look forward to than you have to look back at.
The future hasn't happened and the past has. It can't be changed. In the words of 2000s pop sensation Hilary Duff, "If it's over let it go and come tomorrow it will seem so yesterday."
Songs don't lie. And the sun will come out tomorrow.
