The recent events in Parkland, FL have ran this country up a wall. With this being the 14th school shooting this year alone, it is time for a change.
Students across the nation are scared to go to school, and are afraid for their brothers and sisters in school. This shouldn't be a fact. No one should be afraid to go to school and get their education.
I'm also afraid. A few days ago, my dorm hall seemed eerily quiet. Although it isn't usually a huge deal, after hearing about Florida, I was scared too.
Although my situation does not even come close to what the students in Parkland feel, someone going to school should never have to worry about that. Our biggest concern should be our upcoming tests, homework, and projects.
We need change and reform.
The US has done very little since Columbine to combat mass school shootings, so students are now taking it upon themselves to make change.
From students making speeches to congress and the president, to organizing huge national walkouts, we are trying to make the future different for not only ourselves, but our offspring and family to come.
We need change. We cannot continue to ignore the crimes and death that happen in our public schools today. We need to use what happened as an example of why we need to do something different.
I know this may sound repetitive, but we can’t forget the lives that were lost for no reason. Those students woke up that day not knowing they were going to end up dead just a few hours later. Some died without even knowing what was happening.
Don’t ignore the students and their call to action. Something needs to be done so a mass shooting in a public school can never happen again.
