"Orange is the New Black," a Netflix original series was released a day early. It was supposed to premier on Netflix on Friday, June 12, but instead aired Thursday, June 11, which is the day I started watching. I'm a die hard OITNB fan, so the moment I heard that it premiered early, I had to start binge watching right away. This season had 13 episodes, and each one was about one hour long, which means 13 hours of your life has been taken away from watching this. I was done with the entire season by Sunday morning. I binged watched OITNB the entire weekend. Now I look back and think why did I watch all of it in about two days. Why do we all binge watch Netflix?
There are so many shows on Netflix that I can say I've binge watched and finished. It's not like I have all of the time to watch these shows either. As a college student, I have homework, extra activities, and a job. And yes, I also have friends. Every Saturday night during the semester I would see people tweeting or retweeting memes that describe how their friends go out and they stay in and watch Netflix. I'm doing the same thing, but with friends.
I can never say I'm one of those students who watches Netflix until 4 a.m. without even starting their homework until after. I know someone who is almost failing because of the way he "uncontrollably" keeps pressing "continue watching." But then again, when you find a show that isn't worth waiting, how do you find time for homework or friends. It's like Netflix was made for college students to get distracted.
Some girls say Netflix is like their never judging boyfriend. We can continually eat junk food and look like a bum in bed while cuddling up to that "boyfriend." But that's a little too far. Netflix is like a college student's best friend. Like I said, we can eat junk food, share a common interest, and only be judged when things go a little too far. When Netflix asks you, "Are you still watching 'insert addicting show here,'" you feel a little judged for watching for so long. But, with having Netflix as your best friend, you can still have friends and a significant other, all while being together.
It's as if Netflix was made for college students to have time to themselves, and get away from the fact that they're away from home or how hard college can actually be. Striking up conversations about specific shows on Netflix is probably how I've made a few friends. Watching Netflix is something we all have in common and something we all understand. We all waste time doing something, why not waste time on a good show? We all binge watch Netflix.
