The story of Hosea and Gomer might not be a story thought of often, but one that is very important to how much we are worth. If you're not familiar with this story it goes a little something like this... Hosea was a good faithful man who wanted to do God's will. God told Hosea to go and take a wife that had lived a promiscuous life. Hosea then marries Gomer and has children with her. Gomer eventually runs away and lives an adulterous lifestyle; meanwhile, Hosea is raising their children. Gomer eventually ends up getting too old for her previous lifestyle and is going to be sold into slavery. God tells Hosea to go and get her. At the end of the story Hosea goes to the auction where Gomer is on the auction block. She is unclothed, dirty, and tired. She is hunched over because she just can't bear to look anyone in the eye. The auction starts. No one says anything except for one voice in the back. A voice that says I'll take her. Hosea gets Gomer and says you will stay with me for the rest of your days and so will I be to you.
You are probably wondering why I am calling everyone a prostitute. Gomer is a prostitute. So, why are we the ones that are compared to Gomer? Think about your life and the way you live everyday. No matter how much you try to live a sinless life, it is just not possible. We constantly turn away from God and live a life that is not approved of by God. Why do we do this? Because, just like Gomer, we all think that we know what is best for us and we think we have everything figured out. Just when we think we have everything figured out and planned out God will show you His plan. God's plan is always better than our plan.
Just imagine for a moment a time when something in your life did not go the way you wanted it to and you pushed God away. What happened? Why did you do it? Did you feel alone? Did you feel like there was no hope left? Like any move you made was wrong? What did you do about it? Did you hate God? Did you push Him away? Did you ever think to pray? Did you ever think to ask God for help and to take you back?
That is how we are like Gomer. Gomer didn't deserve for Hosea to come back but he did. God will always be there. When we are at our lowest, dirtest, most shameful time in our life, God will be there saying, "I want you. I want you to be mine. I wanted you so much I sent my only son to die for you. I want you but you have to be mine for all of your days, so I will be to you."
