Summertime is here and many of us will be hitting the ocean soon enough, if not already. More times than not the media always portrays the negativity around all things beach; don't go into this water you'll get an infection, there are sharks everywhere, rip tide warnings, skin cancer scares, the list just goes on. And I thought it would be a good time for everyone to hear some positive light on the topic instead. Because what some don't realize is, there are actual benefits to sea water for both your mind and body. Matter of fact, the sea is ideal for your soul as well. With that, I want to touch on some really beneficial parts of enjoying the sea this summer.

Your skin is going to be flawless.

The salt in the sea water acts as a natural exfoliator and removes dead cells to help encourage the production of the new ones. It helps remove toxins as well as improves the hydration and look of your skin. Ocean water has actually been known to even help cure things like rosacea and dermatitis, it can also drastically help improve those who may be suffering from acne. Its properties works as one of the best antiseptics possible, and can greatly help with cleaning and pain of any minor cuts and abrasions as well. The overall with sea water and your skin is nothing but positive, it can truly help with clearing and creating a youthful feel for far longer than those who don't indulge in the salt life.

Your hair will be as healthy as ever.

Think of your dip in the ocean kind of like a free deep shampoo. The salt strips any excess oils you may have on your head, particularly a great idea for those with naturally greasy hair. Its able to help get rid of any build up from products you use daily to that pesky dandruff issue. Also after rinsing, and the use of conditioner, your hair will probably feel the healthiest it ever has.

Your immune system will kick butt.

The iodine in sea water supports our immune system function. Because it has the ability to open up pores and have sea minerals soak in, your immune system can actually benefit in so many ways. It can boost thyroid activity, fight infections and kill any parasites or bacteria that many try to ruin our health in anyway, it increases our blood flow, and it acts as a powerful antioxidant and antiseptic. Basically, it really does boost your immune system in a way that can greatly adjust your body to help fight any sickness you may battle.

Your workout will be worth it.

You use muscles that you don't target in any other physical activity, that are often forgot about, yet easily achieved when swimming. Its been proven that even treading water can burn up to 600 calories, if done in a fast paced manner. It truly is a great way to stay fit. You'll notice that bodies of swimmers are often toned in areas that many other athletes may lack. Plus you are adding the strain and movement of ocean waves into this exercise and I promise you will feel it.

Your Happiness will be real.

Salt water has known to be treatment to many nervous problems. Both the water and sun work together to help with things like anxiety and depression. There are actual calming elements in the water itself, that can help counterbalance melatonin, fix psychological issues and even help with a more natural sleep pattern. I find that the ocean gives an opportunity to take a moment of self as well, to think and process, a true relaxation technique.

So with all the fears aside of what may come along that other reads may have instilled in you, don't let that fear run you dry. Know that with proper preparation, safety, and well being kept in mind, swims in the salt will be more rewarding than not. Enjoy the ocean water this summer, become the mermaid or merman that you have always wanted, the end profit is forever worth it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
