College decisions are extremely difficult. Trust me, I've been there. I felt pressured to go to an extremely popular, name-brand school. After touring some of those Big 10 schools everyone talks about, I realized that they just weren't for me. That is when I decided to commit to UNH: my happy medium. Everyday I am so thankful to go to school here, and I only just finished the first semester of freshman year. So for all you high school seniors who are or aren't considering UNH, or UNH students/alum looking to relate, this is a good read for you. Here are some reasons as to why UNH is the best school to go to:
The Campus
UNH is breath-taking. It is literally so pretty you just have to come see it in person. Even on a grey, rainy day, the campus never fails to make me smile. It's even prettier in the fall and winter too!
Academics
The Business school is very well known, and was recently ranked 69th in the country). I am personally a Psychology major and already feel very well-educated. I have enjoyed my professors and advisor so far. Nursing is another great, strong program I have many friends in. Honestly, UNH has hundreds of programs to study for, and the opportunities are endless.
D1 Sports
I knew I needed a school with great sports to cheer on, and UNH is perfect, especially for you hockey fans! UNH is known as a hockey school, as both men's and women's teams compete in Hockey East; however, football, m/w soccer, and field hockey are popular, successful teams as well.
Homecoming game/weekend
A weekend of day-drinking, partying, and maybe spending time with your family. It has that Big 10 school tailgate feel, except for the fact that nobody actually goes to the game (although our football team is actually very good!)
Location
Prime. Location. Durham is literally the cutest town ever. It has shops and great restaurants right by campus. It's 1 hour from Boston, 15 minutes from Portsmouth, NH and less than 30 minutes from Kittery & York, Maine (all great places for food, drinks, and shopping). Even better, there's a train station on campus that takes you anywhere from Maine to Mass (And it's attached to the delicious Dairy Bar).
Greek Life
I always knew I wanted to join a sorority, and I don't regret it one bit. For girls, there are 6 panhellenic sorority houses, which gave me just enough options; I never felt overwhelmed. There are about 12 fraternities too. What's great about UNH is that IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE IN GREEK LIFE OR NOT. If you want it, it's there for you. And if not, you have so many other opportunities. You can makes hundreds of friends either way. I have so many friends in and out of my sorority, and that's because of the perfect student body size. I am personally very fortunate to be a sister of Kappa Delta, and I love it so much!
Student Body Size
It's perfect. Not too big, not too small. Most years the number of undergrads is between 12,000-15,000.
Intramurals/Clubs
Okay, so yes, like every school has tons of these, but it's still awesome to have so many options on campus. The MUB at UNH is like the hub of the world; it has literally anything and everything for students. Also, the Hamel Recreation Center, right next to the Whitt (hockey arena), is relatively new and a beautiful place to work out.
Food
Someone from UMass Amherst came here and said that our food was really good. And they're right. UNH has some of the best college food in the country. There are three dining halls: Hoco, Philly, and Stillings. 10/10 would recommend Hoco and Philly. Philly is where most of the freshman go, but you can always catch upperclassmen snatching something to eat because it's so good. There are little convenience stores located all around campus for quick bites too. Also, WILD KITTY. Mozzarella Sticks, Chicken Fingers, Burgers, etc...open 'til 1:00 am all the time. Trust me, you'll go there multiple times, regardless of where you live on campus.
Overall, UNH is such an amazing school and I'm so fortunate to be here for the next 3 years of my college career. Go Wildcats!
