The only things I know about 13 Reasons Why are from the YouTube commercials I've seen and some of the other articles I've read on it. However all I hear people talk about it is that its so good and that they feel sorry for people who are suicidal now. Here's the thing; if it took you watching a show on Netflix to stop telling people to get over wanting to kill themselves, I don't want your sympathy.
From what I've heard of the show, a girl kills herself and gives tapes to all the people who caused her to do it, then they get character development and become better people. I don't know if you know how your mind works when you're suicidal, but you convince yourself that what you're doing is better for everyone else. Now imagine watching a show where someone kills themselves and that makes everyone better people. You might start putting 2 and 2 together and this might be the thing you needed to convince yourself. Now I'm not saying that there's a high chance that this show will cause people to kill themselves, but there's still a chance.
All the non-suicidal watching this show that I and my friends have dealt with are probably the worst thing about this show. There are people who have belittled my friend for being suicidal that are now feeling sorry for him and "understand him now." You don't just watch a show and instantly act nice to the person you've bullied for years. You just don't.
I've pretty much blacklisted the show on every site I use and hopefully this unneeded hype will die down after a while, but I can't blacklist all the straight white girls talking about it like it opened their eyes to the world's problems. I'm already longing for the days I can talk about my problems without them being compaired to a Netflix show.
