Being a server is hard. That's an understatement; being a server can be extremely challenging. We take your order, visit your table countless times and put up with your every demand within reason. So, how can you justify not tipping us?
To start, we make below minimum wage. We rely on our tips. How is it fair for us to make between $3-4 an hour running our butts off not to get the pay that we need? We all have jobs. If you were in our position wouldn't you want to be tipped? It's not fair to us.
On another note, tipping poorly should be frowned upon, too. I understand not tipping if the service was terrible, but 99 percent of the time, that's not the case. Giving us $5 on a bill of $40 is bad taste. It's common sense to leave a basic 10 percent minimum. That's $1 for every $10. You should give 20 percent, as that is the common tipping amount. We rush to your table to get you drinks, bring them back, take your order, put the order in, check on you for refills, get your food out, get more refills, boxes. etc. We never stop. Our job is to serve you. The least you can do is pay us what we deserve.
Moreover, if you have kids at the table, you should be generous. Parties, too. It's hard to juggle a table of eight and keep everyone happy. It's also a nightmare to have children at the table making it look like a battlefield from World War II.
If you don't have the money to properly pay us for our service, then you have no business going out to eat. We work our a**** off to serve you. It's more than unfair to treat us poorly because you lack the responsibility of being a good customer. We remember who tips correctly and who doesn't. If you come back, that will highly influence the service you will get. It's not hard, just tip correctly and be a decent person.
