In a world full of hate, uncertainty, war, and every other sub-category of the ones I named, lies a tiny gleam of light, that punctures its way through at the worst times making them seem a little less blue. No, this tiny gleam of light isn't a god or any type of stronger force in the universe.
In fact, it isn't any kind of person or figure at all, but an energy, that I'm sure we've all felt before. That tiny gleam of light is comedy. And for the odd chance that you don't know what comedy is, let me lay it out there for you.
Comedy is the concept of someone purposely doing something or saying something with the intentions of making an audience, or an individual laugh. It is the idea of taking a subject that everyone is afraid of talking about and turning it into a joke, so we're not afraid or embarrassed by it anymore. It relieves the tension and makes everyone less angry all the time.
Of course, it sounds like the best thing on Earth, because it is. What's better than making someone laugh or laughing so hard that your stomach hurts. That's right, nothing.
By now you're probably wondering why I've gone on to break down and paint a picture of comedy and the idea of it because it has been around for so many years and is globally known. Well, I'm writing this to draw attention towards comedy losing its true meaning, to laugh at yourself.
For many years now and recently there have been occasions where comedians have had to limit and censor their creativity to avoid offending people or events, and essentially losing its reason for being what it is. It has gone on too far that it has even drawn certain famous stand-up comedians away from the stage, leaving their microphones behind.
Comedy isn't about targeting one person or group, it's about treating everyone and every group equal and teaching them how to laugh at themselves and not take everything to heart so much. It teaches you to appreciate who you are.
And the funny thing about that is in order for comedians to do that job, they need to make fun of you first, as a JOKE.
We can't take these comedic relieves for granted because once they are gone, they won't come back. And once they are gone, we will need them more than ever.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, then that gives everyone a reason to laugh at us instead.
