Why Am I Listening To THIS Song?!

An ear worm isn't always worth it.

Why Am I Listening To THIS Song?!
Buster Hein/Cult of Mac

I've said before how I live and breathe with music. It can be something to dance to, to cry to, to laugh with, to sing. But I NEED music as much as possible or I can't function right (I mean... I barely function with it but the music helps). So the other night I was trying to find a song I was in the mood for and nothing was cutting it. I have a lot of favorite songs and I tried as many as I could think of but the beat didn't feel right or the singer's voice wasn't the tone I needed or the message was too uplifting or depressing for just chilling in pajamas reading fanfiction.

Then, a song came to my head out of nowhere.

I didn't question it, just typed it into YouTube search and hit one of the first videos to pop up.

That was it. That was the song I needed right then. Something about the tone was the frequency I needed and the beat was just right. I had that song on repeat the rest of the night.

But the whole time I kept thinking to myself, "Why on god's green earth is Ariana Grande's 'Into You' the song my ears needed tonight?!?!"

I am not a big fan of the singer, I have no connection whatsoever to the lyrics, but I needed that song or I was going to feel off all night.

That sort of thing happens all the time. One night, I'll need Alvin and the Chipmunk covers of early 2000's songs. The next night, I'm listening to Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy. Night after that, I'm trying to find a song from ten seconds of a crack video I was watching. Show tunes then Avril Lavigne's second album then Taylor Swift covers then mashup songs of various artists then pop music covered by punk bands then comedic songs about the struggles of being a straight white man. I might not relate to songs about sex and partying but I am dancing and singing like I totally get it. (Except I REALLY don't.)

"What type of music do you like?" Almost everything???

It doesn't seem to matter if I really relate to the lyrics or if I have no idea what the singer is even saying (enunciate, please). I've listened to songs in Spanish! Because English songs just weren't pleasing to my ears at the time.

Does this happen to anyone else?! A song you wouldn't normally listen to is just what you need? You're usually jamming to hard rock but you've had "Cute Overload" on repeat for three hours? A country fan but for some reason you just want to listen to rap right now? Or maybe your music needs change on the daily and you can't really specify what you're into because it's so varied?

If so, "I'm so into you, into you, into you." (Except not really. I'm not really into anything. It was just a song reference. To the song I STILL DON'T KNOW WHY I AM LISTENING TO.)

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
