Whether you have only heard of Harry Potter due to popularity or you consider yourself a true "Potterhead," there is no denying that this character is iconic. "The Boy Who Lived" is one of the most popular literary figures of our time; arguably the most popular literary figure ever. And he has earned this title rightfully so. Throughout his years at Hogwarts, Harry has taught us lessons to carry through a lifetime. Readers went on adventures, overcame obstacles, defeated darkness, and pushed ourselves further than imaginable all within the pages of a book (or seven). There is a reason this series is described as magical, both literally and figuratively.
Harry shows bravery in the midst of chaos, as his much of his life is spent fighting off attempts of being killed by Voldemort. He never rests during this time and he never gives in to his fear. He fights Voldemort head on until the final battle is won. Great strength can be found in him in times where others would give up entirely.
Harry holds an unwavering devotion to those he loves. In the midst of it all, he is protecting his best friends, Ron and Hermione, and honoring the parents he lost as a baby. When it comes down to it, Harry is even willing to give up his life in order to protect the witches and wizards he came to know.
Harry is proof that your past does not define your future. He went from being known as the boy with the lightning scar to a well-recognized hero. He learned to take the grief of losing his parents in such a gruesome way and turned it into something powerful, a mechanism to help others. Harry is selfless and down-to-earth when the odds are against him constantly.
If you haven't yet enjoyed the "Harry Potter" saga, I urge you to give yourself this gift. The beauty of JK Rowling's imaginative world is one you will never forget. The characters, the setting, the plotline, and most importantly the lessons on sacrifice, honor, and love will stay with you forever. I hold Harry Potter very close to my heart, and imagine most readers do as well. Let's raise our wands in honor of the best series ever written.
Always.
