As many Netflix binge-watchers know, there is a sudden influx of Netflix-original shows being released monthly. Shows like Riverdale, Series of Unfortunate Events and 13 Reasons Why are among them. Now there has been recent talk about there being a second season to the Netflix-original based on a book about a suicide being told "live and in stereo" on a series of tapes. I don't think there should be a second season, in my opinion. Here's why:
The show's entire premise is around the 13 reasons in which Hannah Baker, the main character, killed herself. Only thirteen episodes were in the first season in order to create and follow the illusion that the book creates in the first place. With Hannah Baker gone, a second season won't make much sense without the main character. After the dramatic act of her suicide there isn't much else holding the storyline in place.
Speaking of the suicide, the death scene portrayed in the show broke all of television's rules for when a suicide will be portrayed. The scene was very vivid and many people felt it glorified death. The suicide scene was placed at the end of the season creating the illusion of it being a release from her life. The show made suicide seem like the only option, they didn't even show the crisis hotline number on any of their episodes which I think is a big no-no. The images shown in that show triggered lots of viewers and reopened many people's wounds. I have seen various petitions for that show to have hotline numbers put up, trigger warnings before the show starts, etc. The book was created to help people feeling alone and helpless, and this show has kind of defeated the purpose.
I realize this show is popular but is it worth a second season if it creates a feeling of discomfort and anxiety when watching it?
