I was fortunate enough to attend the Women's March in South Florida, and I cannot express how grateful I am to have participated in such an amazing exercise of free speech and love. This march will surely go down in history, and being able to say that I played a small part in this enormous celebration of women and equality is extremely rewarding. However, I want to express that this march was so much more than just an Anti-Trump protest. This march was an opportunity to celebrate women, and not just white women, but women all across the spectrum. Women of color, LGBTQ women, and women who are generally considered minorities were all given a platform to make their voices heard. This March centered around the idea of all women being able to come together and speak out about issues directly concerning them, such as: reproductive rights, healthcare, sexism, economic inequality, and instances of sexual assault and rape. Although some might have viewed the March as only promoting one type of woman, a white woman, I saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the different types of a "woman".
Walking around yesterday showed me that there are so many ways to be a woman, and every single one of those ways is right. I cannot express the amount of pride and joy that I experienced yesterday, as I spent most of the day completely elated at the sense of community and compassion that everyone I encountered had. In that moment, we were all working together to truly bring about change. This was so much more than just a political protest, as it was a celebration of life. I am not going to let this moment pass, as I am planning on using the momentum from the March to further push me in my efforts for social justice and advocacy.
Women are resilient, and we are not going to stop until all people, regardless of their sex or race, are represented. Yesterday was one of the most important days of my entire life, and I know that it is just the beginning. We will not stop.
As Madonna said at the Women's March on Washington, "[Remember] we are not afraid, that we are not alone, that we will not back down, that there is power in our unity and no opposing force stands a chance in the faith of true solidarity."
