Why The Theatre Is A Home

Most won’t understand, but true theatre geeks will

Why The Theatre Is A Home

If you have ever participated in theatre, you will know that the cast and crew are your family. Sometimes, you may not want them to be, but you know they are. You also know that the space soon becomes your home away from home. You start spending so much time there that you basically do everything there but sleep, and sometimes you do that too.

If this isn’t the case for you, there’s nothing wrong with that; you’re just missing out on one of the best parts of theatre. Having the theater be part of your life is just an amazing choice, in general, but truly living in it makes the experience so much better. I recommend that you don’t just do one thing in the theatre, but you try multiple things such as acting, lighting, assistant directing (if that’s an option), tech or even stage managing. All of these things, and more, give you so many options and really open you up to what theatre is truly about. It also makes you a very well rounded person.

When you have a better understanding about what theatre is truly about you can make it your home. It’s all about knowing what you’re doing there as well as wanting to be there. When you feel this way about the theatre it truly becomes somewhere you can be yourself. The people there don’t tend to judge you because they’re probably just as weird as you are.

If you really dig theatre, like I do, then you understand that it’s just the place you long to be most of the time. It’s a happy or safe place as some may say. You feel comfortable and happy when your either on stage, behind the curtain, or you have a really neat view of the audience from the booth. You give me the chance and I’ll be in the theatre all day, just because I love the space. It’s like a home in a sense that each theatre has its own smell, and you know your instantly home when you walk in and inhale the smell of your favorite theatre.

There’s nothing like preforming on your favorite stage, or visiting a new one, but you have this connection with it no matter what. I may never preform on Broadway, but I can fully remember what each one looked like from the shows that I have seen. And even those spaces felt like home to me because its where magic truly does happen.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
