Now that it's September, everyone is getting excited about Fall. Pumpkin scents and flavors are coming back -- including pumpkin candles or pumpkin spice lattes. Cooler weather is hopefully coming soon. and when it does, we know Ugg boots and riding boots will make their come back. With all the things we love about fall, comes the phrase 'Basic White Girl.'
Incase you don't know what the phrase 'Basic White Girl' or 'Basic' means, this is how urban dictionary defines them:
A female who conforms to her surroundings and claims she is unique. She often drinks Starbucks, wears Ugg boots in August, and posts selfies on social networking sites every. single. day. Also uses hashtags that don't have anything to do with the picture itself.
An adjective used to describe any person, place, activity involving obscenely obvious behavior, dress, or action.
I'll be honest, I've used both of these phrases before. I've even referred to myself as them. Yes, I've used them before, but only as a joke. My problem with these phrases is when people use them to put someone down or to judge someone. Why is it that, as girls, we can't like something without being judged for it?
Sure, a vast majority of girls like pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin scented candles, Ugg boots, riding boots, white converses, north faces, and Iphones, but why does that make us 'basic'? Since when did liking something other people like... not make us our own person? Last time I checked, more than one person can like the same thing -- and that doesn't make them 'basic.'
It goes further than just labeling us as a 'basic white girl,' because of the things we like. This term has the connotation of an air headed girl that can't think for herself. I can like all of these things and still have a mind of my own. No one is the exact same or likes the exact same things. We are all unique in our own way but happen to have a common interest in these things.
I'm also not sure how the term 'basic white girl' came about when I know girls that aren't white that like these things as well. Even guys like Starbucks! Guys don't get called 'basic' when they all like and play the same video game. So why is it that just girls are being judged?
The truth is, that pumpkin scents and flavors, Ugg boots, riding boots, leggings and north faces only lasts for a limited time of each year. (Unless you're like me and wear your north face all year long.) We only get to enjoy the beauty of Fall, and the things we love about it, for a short period of time.
I may love all of the things that is considered being a 'basic white girl,' but I am not 'basic.' I am my own person and so are you!
When the weather permits, break out your leggings and Uggs, drink your Pumpkin Spiced Latte and be your own person -- no matter what anyone says about the things you like!
