Picture this: it's 1998 (which was almost 20 years ago if anyone wants to feel old) and the best movie of all time has just come out. There are secret twins, long-lost loves, and British accents abound. The story of two twins, separated by their parents at birth, who reunite at summer camp and scheme to switch lives and bring their parents back together. This is movie is equal parts funny, sassy and heart-warming. In my personal opinion, it just might be the most iconic movie ever to grace our lives. And here's some reasons why:
1. All of the '90s fashion
If Lindsey Lohan wasn't rocking a jean jacket and scrunchie, she was wearing a plaid suit with matching headband. Not to mention everything single one of Elizabeth James's beautiful wedding dresses or the twins matching Polo button downs.
2. The best summer camp ever
While it is a little illogical that a camp would lock two 10-year-olds in an isolation cabin, everything else about this place seemed purely magical. From the fencing to the canoeing, every '90s kid wanted to experience a summer just like this (and maybe find their long lost twin along the way).
3. The most epic handshake of all time
Let's be honest, who did not practice this amazingly complicated and adorable handshake between British twin Annie and the family's butler Martin?
4. An amazing soundtrack
The music is reason enough to view this '90s classic. From "L.O.V.E." to "Do You Believe in Magic," this movie will have you remembering all the wonderful hits of the past and probably singing right along.
5. Hilarious practical joke inspiration
Hallie and Annie had quite a few tricks up their matching sleeves (besides the whole switching places thing). We all cheered and laughed when evil Meredith found a lizard on her Evian bottle or woke up to find herself in the middle of the lake. And to be honest, we've all thought about stealing their material for use on our unsuspecting friends.
6. Long lost true love
Even after 10 years apart, Liz James and Nick Parker found love again and reunited the twins for good. We all cried and cheered when Hallie and Nick showed up in London to bring their family back together.
For the above reasons, and so many more, "The Parent Trap" is a true classic. So dust off that old DVD or VHS tape, and go back to 1998 and the best movie ever made.
